Bangladesh is making diplomatic efforts to rescue a six-match cricket series against India scheduled for next month, with senior officials from both countries involved in talks to prevent the tour from being cancelled or delayed again.
The proposed white-ball series includes three ODIs and three T20 matches. It was initially scheduled for August last year but was postponed after relations between Dhaka and New Delhi deteriorated following major political upheaval in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Sports Minister Aminul Haque said discussions were now taking place at the ministerial level, with the foreign ministers of the two countries involved in efforts to resolve the dispute.
Foreign Ministers Join Cricket Talks
Haque said Bangladesh was working to end the deadlock surrounding the planned India tour, expressing hope that the issue could be settled soon.
“We want to quickly resolve the deadlock,” the minister said, adding that Dhaka remained optimistic about reaching an agreement.
The involvement of the two countries’ foreign ministers underlines the extent to which political relations have become intertwined with sporting exchanges.
The cricket series is important for both teams, but its future depends largely on whether the broader diplomatic tensions can be managed.
Bangladesh-India Relations Remain Strained
Relations between Bangladesh and India have remained difficult since a mass uprising in 2024 forced former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power.
Hasina subsequently left Bangladesh for India, where she remains, further complicating relations between the neighbouring countries.
India had been a close ally of Hasina’s government, and her presence in India has become a sensitive issue between Dhaka and New Delhi.
The political tensions have also affected cricketing ties between the two countries.
Bangladesh Previously Pulled Out of India Event
In February, Bangladesh declined to send its team to India for the T20 World Cup, citing security concerns.
The International Cricket Council rejected Bangladesh’s request to have its matches relocated to Sri Lanka. Scotland was subsequently brought into the tournament as Bangladesh’s replacement.
The episode added to uncertainty over future cricketing engagements between the two countries.
Bangladesh’s sports minister said the government now wanted to resolve the dispute and prevent the planned bilateral series from suffering a similar fate.
Six Matches Planned
If the tour goes ahead, India and Bangladesh will play six white-ball matches, comprising three one-day internationals and three T20 internationals.
The series would provide both teams with valuable competitive preparation and offer an opportunity to restore some normality to their cricketing relationship.
However, the schedule remains dependent on an agreement between the two governments.
India and Bangladesh’s Recent Cricket History
India last toured Bangladesh in 2022, when the two sides played a two-Test series and three ODIs.
India won the Test series 2-0, while Bangladesh claimed the ODI series 2-1.
